Dogs are part of our lives. We love our pooches, be they spaniels or corgis, dobies or labradoodles. There was a time, not too long ago, that there were no dog parks for our beloved canines to romp around in. But in recent years, dog parks have grown in number and sophistication.

When dog parks first came about, they were often just fenced off areas that were largely refuges for dogs in areas where dogs were not allowed to be, off or even sometimes on leashes. But nowadays, they have become a social gathering place for pets and owners alike.

Features of Dog Parks

Instead of just a grassy or dirt area surrounded by a chain link fence, dog parks of today can be mini playgrounds for man’s best friends. There is a variety of dog park equipment to entice and engage our dog’s sense of playfulness and fun.

Many people who have watched animal agility shows on television will often recognize some equipment at dog parks from dog agility courses. These can get quite complex. There are hoops for the dog to go through, see-saws, and tunnels. There are wooden climbing stations with little stairs that they can negotiate.

One of the greatest additions to dog parks is that of dog waste receptacles. Again, in the past, owners would have to bring their own bags and hunt down a garbage can to take care of their pets’ little (or big) messes. It was difficult if you forgot your bag.

Today, there are special areas often designated within the dog park where pets can do their business. This centralizes the messiness, and keeps the dog park clean for other users in the rest of the areas for dogs.

Often, there are pet waste stations, where special doggie bags (not the kind you get at restaurants) are available for folks to pull out and use to collect their dogs’ waste. Some of the bags, usually plastic, often have cute doggie designs on them like paw prints or cute sayings.

Benefits of Dog Parks

Dog parks are a wonderful place to take your dog to. Dogs are social creatures, and they thrive on interaction with other canine friends. Socialization is key to training your dog. Getting your canine used to other people, strangers, and new dogs is absolutely crucial to its healthy development. A dog that has little to no interaction with new people or other dogs often develops psychological problems that will only get worse as it gets older.

Many dogs are cooped up in houses for a large part of the day, as often both owners have to work and commute. Dogs need exercise, and thrive when they have large, open spaces to run around in. Not only do they get exercise, but their brains stay sharp and active, and the dog is calmer during the times it is inside.

Dog parks are also a great way to meet other dog owners and share stories, fun, and advice. One can learn a lot from other owners’ experiences, and visiting is fun.

Overall, dog parks have tremendous benefits for both owners and dogs. If you haven’t brought your dog to a dog park, go check one out – your dog will thank you for it.
